It still annoys me but I've just accepted it. Unfortunately until they officially support that, we're stuck with the per user version.
I agree with you and most everyone else - we should be able to install a global Program Files version (just like chrome defaults per user but has a true machine wide installer). They claim it should be per user is so it can remain constantly updated without requiring admin privs to patch, and the client + server side must be up to date for it to function correctly.Īlso, it's an electron app that uses squirrel, and afaik only per user apps are buildable with squirrel (though this may have changed). It doesn't require admin rights which is probably one of the reasons it's made as a per user application. We've been doing this on our physical machines as well. If you manually create the key HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Citrix\PortICA then the Teams install will think it is on a VM and will install using the ALLUSER command line option and will be visible in the \Program Files folder. It is looking for a specific registry key to "detect" if it is on a VM or not. The catch is MS made the ALLUSER operation only valid in a VDI environment. ALLUSER will make Teams install into the \Program Files folder and operate like we would expect standard software to install. ALLUSERS will make Teams visible in the Programs and Features list of installed programs. The MSI install will by default install Teams so that when new users login the Teams software is copied into \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\ and a shortcut is placed on the users desktop. The application is designed to be used by teams to share messages in private. Download Slack Windows is a new chat application that is designed to make work a little less stressful by allowing teams to share messages in private. I still don't understand why Microsoft made such a mess of this one. Slack is a private chat application with private channels for team members to share messages.
